My son asked me last week what the oldest living thing was. We looked it up together. The answer — a Pando aspen grove in Utah, approximately 80,000 years old — produced in him a quality of silence I associate with genuine astonishment. He was quiet for a while. Then: 'Was it there when dinosaurs were around?' It wasn't — it postdates the dinosaurs by tens of millions of years. But the question was exactly right: the scale of that existence had activated something in him that was reaching for context.

Wonder — the experience of encountering something that exceeds your current framework — is one of the most important emotional and cognitive experiences available to a child. It is different from curiosity: curiosity is the desire to know. Wonder is the response to encountering the scale of what there is to know. Curiosity asks questions. Wonder produces the experience of scale that makes questions feel worth asking.

The research on wonder in child development is relatively recent but consistent: children who have regular experiences of wonder show higher scores on measures of intellectual humility, better capacity for abstraction, more sophisticated moral reasoning, and higher tolerance for uncertainty. This is the biological meaning of spring. Not warmth — light. Wonder is not a luxury. It is the foundation.
