I moved the phone charger from my daughter's bedroom to the kitchen last Monday. Not with announcement, not with explanation — I just moved it. She asked why. I said: I think sleep will be better without the phone in the room at night. She said: it's not that bad. I said: let's try it for a week.

What happened over the following week is not what I expected. I expected sustained resistance. There was a day of resistance — the first Tuesday — and then what happened was something I can only describe as relief. My daughter started going to sleep earlier. She started waking without an alarm on some mornings. She told me, at the end of the week, that she hadn't been as tired.

I want to be careful about what I'm claiming. I'm not claiming that the charger move caused the sleep improvement. I'm saying that there was a charger move and there was a sleep improvement and they coincided and my daughter noticed the coincidence. That noticing is the important thing. The technology decision made for a child, with explanation of the reason and willingness to assess the result, is doing something different from the rule that is simply imposed — it is modelling a specific relationship with technology.
