My daughter said last week that the afternoon looked 'different.' She was standing at the kitchen window at half past four and she meant it literally — not as a mood, not a metaphor. The quality of the light, she said, had changed. She was right. The equinox is Monday.

In September and October, melatonin production begins shifting. The hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles responds to two variables: the duration of daylight and the angle at which light enters the eye. By the equinox, both are changing noticeably — the days are shorter, and the light arrives at a lower angle that the photoreceptors in the retina register differently.

Children's bodies respond to this before they have language for what's happening. The hunger increases slightly. Sleep onset comes earlier. The emotional reactivity that parents notice in October — the child who is harder to manage in the late afternoon, more tearful than usual, more easily overwhelmed — is mostly physiological. It is the nervous system adjusting to a shift in environmental conditions that the rest of the schedule hasn't accounted for.

This is not a mood problem. It is a biological transition happening on a schedule that predates electricity by several millennia. And yet we treat it almost universally as a behavioural issue, which is both unfair to the child and ineffective as an intervention. The child who is in tears at four o'clock on a Tuesday in October is not misbehaving. They are doing autumn correctly. The label changes what the intervention is. Every person in the room at four o'clock on a Tuesday in October is managing biology, not character. The sooner we give that the right name, the more useful our responses become.
