What the school phone ban actually teaches.

It's not about the phone

My son came home on a Wednesday in September and told me about a conversation he'd had at lunch. He was animated. He'd been talking with three people he'd never properly spoken to before, about something they'd all noticed in the previous lesson. It was, he said, a good lunch. I asked if this was unusual. He thought about it. 'A bit, yeah.'

His school implemented the full phone ban in August — not just in classrooms, in bags, from arrival to dismissal. He was furious when the letter arrived in July. By the second week of September he had forgotten it existed.

I work in design. I spend my days thinking about attention — how spaces shape it, how objects compete for it, what happens to behaviour when you change the environment rather than the rule. The phone ban interests me professionally as much as parentally.

The research is consistent and under-discussed. Studies from France, where the national ban has been in place since 2018, and from England, where guidance became policy in 2024, show the same pattern: test scores improve modestly, which is what gets reported. What doesn't get reported as often is the social data. When phones are removed from communal spaces, face-to-face conversation between adolescents increases substantially — not because anyone mandated it, but because conversation fills the space the phone used to occupy. The social default — what people do when they have unstructured time together — shifts back toward each other.

My son didn't decide to have a conversation at lunch. He had a conversation at lunch because the alternative was gone.
