Mandela Day is July 18th. The global call is for 67 minutes of service — one minute for each year of Nelson Mandela's public service life. The 67 minutes is not metaphorical. It is an invitation to do something specific for someone in your community who needs something done.

I have been thinking about why 67 minutes works as a unit. It is specific enough to be credible but long enough to be real. You cannot do a symbolic 67 minutes. You cannot tick a box in 67 minutes. 67 minutes is long enough to require genuine commitment, and short enough not to require you to transform your life.

The 67-minute act is not a solution to the world's problems. It is a specific practice — one that produces a specific experience for both the giver and the receiver, and that builds in children the understanding that their actions have consequences for real people in their actual community.
