July has a specific quality of attention available to it that other months don't. The school has closed. The formal demands have lifted. The long days produce a kind of temporal spaciousness — the sense that there is enough time to notice things. My daughter is different in July than in October. In October she is compressed — quick, efficient, managing. In July she is open — slow, curious, available to what is happening around her.

I think about this difference as a seasonal mode. The October mode and the July mode are both expressions of the same child, but they produce different kinds of attention. The July attention is the kind that finds things.

Gerald is in this edition not as the main character but as the method. The method is: find the specific thing, in the specific place, and return to it with genuine attention over time. The thing reveals itself to the returning. The slow worm reveals itself to the child who crawls under the hedge twice a week in September. This is the specific thing that produces the change. The change comes from the practice. The practice comes from the decision to try it once, this week, in the ordinary moment that is already available.
