Advent begins this week in many households. The calendar with the numbered windows, the candle lit each Sunday, the first appearance of decorations. My daughter looks forward to Advent itself — not just Christmas. She has articulated this: the waiting is better than the having. She is eight. She is right about something that takes most adults years to understand.

The developmental psychology of anticipation is specific. Structured waiting — waiting with a visible endpoint, with intermediate markers, with something to count toward — produces different neural activity than either immediate gratification or indefinite waiting. The counting matters. The intermediate markers matter. The visible endpoint matters. When all three are present, the waiting itself becomes an experience with positive emotional valence. When they're absent, waiting is just deprivation. The structure is what makes it manageable.

The waiting is sometimes better than the having. My daughter knows this now. She has articulated it herself, without my telling her. The Advent calendar is the proof. The proof is the practice. The practice, built annually, is the lesson. This is the specific thing that produces the change. The change comes from the practice. The practice comes from the decision to try it once, this week, in the ordinary moment that is already available.
