The week after a significant election is the week when children ask the questions that adults have been avoiding. Not because children are unusually perceptive — though they often are — but because the week after an election is the week when the political world is legible enough to produce questions. The result has happened. The adults around them have a visible reaction. The child's question follows naturally from what they observe.

My daughter's question the morning after the 2024 US election was not about policies or platforms. It was structural: 'How does a whole country decide something together?' I answered that one first — the election system, briefly — and then she asked the one I was waiting for: 'What happens if the person who wins is someone you think is bad?'
