The week where nothing needs to happen
Late July. The biology of doing less — and why the brain needs it.
It's the last Saturday of July. In most of Europe, nothing urgent is happening. Schools are closed. Inboxes are quieter. The afternoons stretch in a way they don't the rest of the year. And somewhere in that stretch — in the boredom, the slowness, the vague sensation that we should probably be doing something — something important is happening in your children's brains.
I study biology. Specifically, I've spent the last decade looking at how biological systems respond to cycles of stress and recovery — in cells, in animals, in children. And the thing I keep coming back to, especially in July, is how poorly we've translated this science into how we think about family life.
We understand rest in muscles. We understand that a runner who never recovers breaks down. We understand sleep debt at some basic level — most parents have felt it. But we've somehow missed the equivalent truth about the developing brain: unstructured, unstimulated time is not a gap in development. It is part of the mechanism.
Neuroscientists call it the default mode network. It's a set of brain regions that activate specifically when we are not doing anything goal-directed — when we're daydreaming, mind-wandering, lying in the grass watching clouds. For decades, researchers assumed this network was the brain idling. Noise between signals.
They were wrong.
The default mode network turns out to be doing some of the most metabolically expensive work the brain performs. It consolidates memories. It processes social experiences. It runs simulations of future scenarios. It integrates emotional information. It is, in a very literal sense, the brain digesting its own experience.
And it only activates when nothing else is demanding attention.
For children, whose brains are doing this integration work at a rate that will never be matched again in their lives, this matters enormously. A summer full of camps and activities and enrichment programmes — however wonderful each one is — can crowd out the very neural processing time that makes experience meaningful.
Not because stimulation is bad. Because rest is not the opposite of development. Rest is part of it.
