My son learned to ride a bike in the spring. The moment he stopped needing my hand on the saddle — the exact moment, I could feel it before I saw it — something in me wanted to run alongside him forever. And something else knew absolutely not to.

There's a particular look that parents give when their child does something alone for the first time. I've seen it on other parents' faces and felt it on my own. It's not pride, exactly — or not only pride. It's something more like: I recognise this moment. This is the thing I've been walking toward without knowing the destination.

The research on children's independence development identifies a pattern called 'scaffolded withdrawal' — the gradual reduction of adult support as the child's competence increases. Not sudden abandonment. Not permanent hovering. A slow, calibrated removal of the hand from the saddle.

What the research also shows — and what I think about every time I see it — is that the quality of the withdrawal matters as much as the timing. A parent who withdraws anxiously, who watches from ten metres away with visible tension, who rushes to help at the first wobble, communicates something to the child: this thing is dangerous, you might not be capable, I don't fully believe in you yet.

A parent who lets go and then looks — not at the child, but at where the child is going — communicates something different: I expect you to continue. I am available if needed. I am not afraid of what happens next.
