What children learn from families that practice giving

On generosity — not as a value to teach, but as a practice to live in front of them.

My daughter is seven and very interested in fairness. Not in the abstract — in the immediate, personal, precise kind. She monitors the distribution of screen time, dessert quantities, and parental attention with a calibration that would be impressive in an auditor. Last month she noticed that I had bought a colleague a birthday gift and started asking, systematically, who I bought gifts for and why.

Children's interest in fairness begins early and runs deep. By age three, most children have a working concept of equal distribution. By age five, they can apply a concept of merit — more for those who worked harder. By age eight, they're capable of equity reasoning — more for those who have less.

What they are not capable of — not naturally, not without exposure — is generosity that doesn't make sense within a fairness framework. Giving to someone with no expectation of return. Giving when it costs you something real. Giving to someone you don't know.

This has to be shown. Not explained — shown. The research on prosocial development is consistent: children whose parents model charitable behaviour, in visible ways, are substantially more likely to develop the same habits. The modelling doesn't have to be grand. It doesn't have to be named.

My daughter watched me make a donation last year to a flood relief fund. I didn't explain it to her as a lesson. I was at the kitchen table, I clicked, I said 'done' and moved on. A week later she asked if we could give some of her birthday money to 'the water people.' I said yes. She counted it out herself.
