The October dip. What it is and what to do with it.

Week six is always the hardest

Week six of term. There's a name for this β€” teachers call it the October dip, the point where the initial energy of September has burned through and the half-term break hasn't arrived yet. I've been tracking my own children through October for seven years now and the pattern is almost perfectly consistent. Week six. The specific complaints start.

The specific complaint is the good sign. This is the counterintuitive thing I tell parents who come to me worried in October: vague complaints about school in September are less informative than specific complaints in October. 'It's rubbish' in September means: adjusting to a new context, nonspecific overload, normal. 'She said I can't be in their group at lunch on Thursdays' in October means: your child has been paying attention. They know enough about the social environment to have specific disappointments in it. That specificity is evidence of engagement.

The October dip looks like: increased tiredness, more emotional reactivity at home, more complaints about specific people and situations, reduced motivation for homework. It is not a regression. It is a calibration. The child who presented as enthusiastic and uncomplicated in the first three weeks was running on novelty. The child who is tired and specific about their frustrations in week six is telling you the truth about the environment as they actually experience it.

The body is running lower in October than it was in September. The melatonin shift from the equinox has moved through. The social energy that was novelty-fuelled is now maintenance-fuelled. Maintenance is more expensive. The child needs more sleep, more food, more physical movement, and more time when nothing is required of them.
