Burns Night and cultural identity. What belonging to a tradition teaches.

Burns Night is January 25th, the celebration of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. I am not Scottish. I celebrate it anyway, because my research interests intersect with the biology of ritual and because Burns Night is one of the clearest examples available of how a shared cultural occasion creates belonging.

My daughter asked why we celebrate a Scottish poet's birthday when we are not Scottish. I said: because the ritual is good, and good rituals are available to everyone. She thought about this.
