I have a complicated relationship with food. Growing up in New York, food was always two things simultaneously: fuel and event. The family meal was not just nourishment β€” it was the primary location of family information, negotiation, and solidarity. The table was where things were said that couldn't be said anywhere else, where alliances formed and dissolved, where the texture of family life was most legible.

I didn't understand this until I moved out. The first years of living alone, I ate standing up over the kitchen counter and had no idea what I was missing. What I was missing was not nutrition. I was eating fine. What I was missing was the particular kind of conversation that only happens when two or more people are sitting down with no task except eating.
