What we miss when we replace boredom.

Boredom isn't the problem

My son said he was bored last Saturday at eleven in the morning. I was making coffee. He was standing in the middle of the kitchen saying it in the tone of someone reporting a symptom, waiting to be prescribed something.

I said: I know. He said: so what are we doing? I said: I don't know yet. He stood there for another thirty seconds, looked around the kitchen as if taking inventory, and then went upstairs.

Forty-five minutes later he came down with something he'd made from the Lego that had been in a box under his bed for two years. Not a kit β€” a thing he'd designed. Something with a function I didn't entirely understand but which he explained at length and with diagrams.

I want to be precise about what happened in those forty-five minutes. I don't know. I wasn't there. I didn't suggest anything. I didn't provide materials. The boredom and the available resources and his own mind produced something, without my involvement, that he was genuinely proud of.

He put the Lego thing on his desk. It's been there for three weeks. He adds to it occasionally, a piece here and there, as if the project is ongoing rather than completed. This seems right. The things that come out of the boredom aren't finished products β€” they're ongoing things that keep being there.

The boredom was not an emergency. The things I didn't do in those forty-five minutes matter as much as what he did.
