I want to talk about boredom as a biological event rather than a motivational failure. My son, in the first week of July, says he is bored approximately four times a day. Each time I say: okay. He looks at me, waiting for the solution. No solution comes. He goes away. Something happens.

By the second week of July, he stops asking. He has found something — in this case, a system for categorising his Lego collection by colour, function, and rarity — that he would not have found if I had solved the July boredom. The categorisation system is genuinely sophisticated. It involves a hierarchy I don't fully understand and a terminology he invented. He can explain it. He is proud of it. Nobody told him to make it.

This is the default mode network at work. The DMN is the brain's resting-state network — the system that activates when external demands are removed. It is associated with imagination, self-reflection, planning, and creative problem-solving. It is suppressed by external stimulation. When the screen goes on, the DMN goes off. When the screen goes off and the boredom arrives, the DMN goes on. The boredom is not the problem. The boredom is the condition that the DMN requires to do its work.
