My daughter asked me once whether our family was a normal family. I asked what she meant by normal. She said: 'One where everyone knows the rules without having to be told.' I thought about this for a while. Then I said: yes. We are exactly that.

What makes a family feel like a family, from a biological perspective, is not the legal definition or the residential arrangement. It is the shared nervous system regulation that develops between people who spend consistent time together in conditions of safety.

This sounds clinical. What it means in practice is simpler: the nervous system of a person you are close to starts to track your nervous system. When you are calm, they are calmer. When you are activated, they feel it before you've said anything. This co-regulation happens between parents and children, between siblings, between partners. It is the biological substrate of what we call closeness.

The 'family feeling' my daughter was describing — the knowing of rules without being told — is partly this: her nervous system has learned the patterns of ours. The rules are not verbal instructions. They are regularities her body has memorised from years of repetition. That is a form of belonging that is deeper than any definition.

The family feeling my daughter was describing is the body's memory of repetition. Not the mind's — the body's. That is a different and more durable kind of knowing. It is also where I want to be. It is.
