Shrove Tuesday, pancakes, and what transitional rituals teach.

Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday was last week — the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar. In the UK it is celebrated as Pancake Day. In Vienna, the Fasching carnival season ends on Shrove Tuesday. In New Orleans, it is Mardi Gras. Across cultures and by different names, the same thing is happening: a ceremony of excess before a period of restraint. The last night before the change.

What interests me about Shrove Tuesday as a clinician is what it reveals about how humans relate to transitions.

Transitions are hard. Not just difficult — genuinely disorienting. The nervous system finds change more demanding than stability, because stability allows the system to run on prediction rather than computation. When something changes, the prediction errors accumulate, and the system has to work harder to maintain its model of the world.

Rituals around transitions serve a very specific function: they mark the boundary. They say: this is where the before ends and the after begins. The pancake is not arbitrary. It uses up the eggs and fat that would be avoided during Lent — so the ritual has practical logic — but it also creates a shared, sensory, memorable marker at the exact point of change. You know when the change happened. You were there. You ate something together.

The transitional ritual marks the exact point of change. You know when it happened. You were there. That knowing is what ceremony gives.
