Children who get morning light sleep better. The biology is beautiful.
International Day of Light. What happens in the body when your child sees the sky before a screen.
The sky outside my kitchen window is never the same twice. The colour temperature of daylight shifts from roughly 1,800 Kelvin at dawn — the warm orange of early light — to 6,500 Kelvin at noon, and back down through the afternoon. Your eyes and your child's eyes have photoreceptors specifically calibrated to this shift. When those photoreceptors detect the dawn signal, they start a clock.
The clock is your circadian rhythm — the approximately 24-hour biological cycle that governs not just sleep but hormone release, metabolism, immune function, mood regulation, and cognitive performance. Every cell in your body participates. The master clock is in the hypothalamus, in a region called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It reads light.
If your child's first light exposure in the morning is a screen — held close, emitting blue-spectrum light at high intensity relative to the darkness around it — the suprachiasmatic nucleus receives a confused signal. It may interpret this as reason to delay melatonin suppression, which delays full wakefulness. Or it may receive an ambiguous signal about time of day, which propagates through all the downstream systems that depend on knowing what time it is.
The fix is almost embarrassingly simple. Morning light. Outside, or at a bright window. Ten minutes. Before any screen.
A 2023 study in JAMA Pediatrics found that children who received at least thirty minutes of outdoor morning light had significantly better sleep onset time and duration than those who didn't — independent of screen time, exercise, and other variables. The effect size was larger in children under eight, and particularly large in those previously described as 'bad sleepers.'
