My daughter asked me last week whether Christmas was soon. It was November 10th. I said: not yet, about six weeks. She said: it feels like it's already here. I asked her what she meant. She said: everything is telling me it's coming. She's right. The everything is the problem.

The pre-Christmas season — roughly six weeks from mid-November to December 25 — is the period of highest ambient stimulation in the annual calendar for most families in the northern hemisphere. School plays, concerts, advent calendars, social obligations, decorations, advertising, and the accumulated emotional weight of expectation create a stimulation load that the child's nervous system was not designed to process for six consecutive weeks.

The result is predictable and well-documented. By the second week of December, most children are showing symptoms of nervous system overload: sleep disruption, emotional volatility, decreased frustration tolerance, difficulty with transitions. Parents, who are experiencing the same stimulation at the same time, are less resourced to manage this. The collision is almost guaranteed.

I've tracked this in my own household for five years, since I started paying attention to the pattern rather than treating each difficult December day as an isolated incident. The pattern is precise: it starts around November 20th, peaks around December 10th to 15th, and breaks on Christmas Day itself — not because of the presents, but because the anticipation finally resolves. I've tracked this in my own household for five years, since I started paying attention to the pattern rather than treating each difficult December day as an isolated incident. The pattern is precise and repeatable.
