The thing I notice every summer in the clinic in Vienna is that the presenting complaints change by about the second week of August. The concerns that parents bring in June — sleep timing, school anxiety, friendship problems — are replaced by a different set. Not problems, exactly. More like: questions that only get asked when the pace slows down enough to ask them.

The summer sleep pattern in children is genuinely interesting from a clinical perspective. The school year imposes a social zeitgeber — a time-giver — that overrides the child's natural sleep preference: a fixed wake time, a fixed departure time, a fixed arrival time. This social clock produces a kind of chronobiological compression that children adapt to over the course of the academic year.

When school ends, the social zeitgeber disappears. The child's biological clock, freed from the external signal, gradually drifts toward its natural position. For most children this means a later sleep onset and a later natural waking — the same pattern that appears in adults who stop using alarm clocks on holiday. The August child who won't go to sleep until eleven and won't wake until nine is not misbehaving. They are running on their biological clock rather than their social clock.

I see families in Vienna in July who are distressed by this drift. They feel they are losing the sleep habits established during the school year. What they are actually seeing is the natural resting position of the child's circadian system — the system that tells them when they are genuinely sleepy and when they are genuinely rested.
