I want to make a clinical case for laughter. Not as a nice-to-have — as a developmental necessity. The research on laughter and wellbeing is robust: genuine laughter, produced in social contexts, releases endorphins and oxytocin, reduces cortisol, strengthens social bonds, and improves immune function. These are not small effects. They are the same mechanism that exercise and social connection produce.

In my clinic in Vienna, I ask families about laughter. Specifically: when was the last time the family laughed together, and what produced it? The families who struggle the most are often the families who haven't laughed together in weeks. The absence of laughter is a clinical signal worth taking seriously.

My son has a specific laugh for a specific recurring situation — when something he predicted would go wrong goes wrong in exactly the way he predicted. He is never cruel about it. He is genuinely, delightedly, specifically amused. When I see that laugh, I know something about the relationship is working. This is the specific thing that produces the change. The change comes from the practice. The practice comes from the decision to try it once, this week, in the ordinary moment that is already available.
